Some time ago we learned about some of the benefits of functional foods in an article in which some of the virtues and properties that have functional foods for the health of those who eat them.

Precisely because of this issue, we know that functional foods are to be natural foods that have been “modified” to possess greater benefits and health properties.

For example, there are functional foods that have to do with natural foods in which one of its components has been improved from special culture conditions, a food that has been removed a component to have fewer side effects (or you added to produce benefits), a chemically enhanced food for health benefits.

But this time we will not return again to discuss what are functional foods, much less what their benefits. We will know precisely the types of functional foods in the world.

Types and varieties of functional foods

Probiotics

They are live microorganisms which, ingested in quantities as recommended as adequate, certainly have beneficial effects on health.

However, for these microorganisms can be probiotics, must be of human origin, non-pathogenic by nature, resistant to destruction by gastric secretions and bile, able to colonize the gastrointestinal tract, and be resistant to destruction by technological procedures .

Prebiotic foods

Prebiotic foods are components of the food itself that are not absorbed in the small intestine, but that on reaching the colon, promote the growth and activity of the bacteria itself beneficial to the body.

Among the most commonly used prebiotics, including: the strain L. Casei DN-114 001, Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus.

Food bifidus effect (bifidogenic)

These are foods that have an effect through which it promotes the development of beneficial intestinal flora, such as Lactobacillus and Bifibacterium.

Food symbiotic

Come to be a functional food “special” because they contain prebiotics and probiotics, positive and beneficial influence on the body to improve survival and self-implantation of living microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract.
