The disease
Acute sinusitis in children is an inflammation of the lining of one or more sinus.
Pathophysiology
It is most often viral, with possible secondary bacterial infections. The bacteria involved are the same as those responsible for acute purulent otitis media: Haemophilus influenza, Streptococcus pneumonia and Branhamella catarrhalis.
Epidemiology
It is estimated that 5 to 10% of nasopharyngitis, which are the most frequent infections of the child, are complicated by rhinosinusitis which 10% could be bacterial.
Complications
The simplest forms of acute purulent maxillary sinusitis resolve spontaneously. Untreated, more severe forms can progress to a sub acute or chronic, with possible complications orbital or meningeal.
