Magnesium Sulfate for Treating Premature Baby

The latest development arising from a team of researchers from the University of North Carolina is the use of magnesium sulfate to reduce by half the risk of the baby suffering from cerebral palsy.
Cerebral palsy is a serious complication in premature infants caused when part of the brain that control movement are damaged, causing deficiencies in coordination and muscle control.
Scientists conducted a study which found that mothers delivering a dose of magnesium sulfate just before they gave birth, the risk decreased.
Specifically, it was a group of mothers 24 to 31 weeks that bag had broken and were in labor.
Babies born to mothers who were given magnesium sulfate had an incidence of moderate or severe cerebral palsy 2%, compared to 4% of the babies of those women who were not given.
Although no one knows for sure what the effect of this mineral in the body of the baby, is believed to help dilate blood vessels in his brain.
