Advice for Expectant Mothers: The Nappy Change
Expectant mothers are often worried about their first nappy change. However, there is no need to be apprehensive, as changing a nappy is easy if you follow these tips:
Before your baby is even born, prepare a changing area that includes all the supplies you will need. Preparing now will put your mind at ease for when you and your baby first arrive at home. Stock up on supplies like clean nappies, wipes and soft washcloths. Also keep a supply of ointment cream or petroleum jelly on hand.
You will likely be having nappy change time more frequently than you ever imagined, so don’t worry if the very first time does not go perfectly smoothly. You will have plenty of opportunities to improve in the next few years!
Start by washing your hands throughly and gathering your supplies. Remember to never leave the baby alone on a changing table, as it is easy to fall off and cause an injury.
Unfasten the nappy and use a wipe or soft, clean washcloth to wipe away the mess. If you are changing a boy, cover the penis with a clean cloth to avoid an accident. Gently hold the baby’s ankles up and lift the bottom off the changing area. With your other hand, fold the soiled nappy so the clean outer portion faces up. Grab the nappy and dispose of it in a rubbish bin or small sack.
Clean the baby’s frontal area with a wipe or cloth. Always wipe from front to back to ensure that harmful bacteria is not spread. Lift the baby’s legs to clean the bottom.
Now is the time to apply ointment cream or petroleum jelly to prevent the baby from getting a rash. With legs still raised, place a clean nappy on the changing surface and open it. Gingerly place the baby down on the nappy and bring the front half up. Fasten the nappy securely, but not too tightly, as that can cause irritation.
Congratulations! You survived your first nappy change!
